Growing Selling Pressure on Bitcoin Amid High Trader Profits

RELEASE Sep 29, 2026 VIEWS 499 DESK C. Monasterio

Bitcoin's market faces potential corrections as unrealized profits among traders hit a 21-month high, signaling increased selling pressure.

Growing Selling Pressure on Bitcoin Amid High Trader Profits

Recent analysis by CryptoQuant indicates that, despite Bitcoin's status in a bullish market, an uptick in unrealized profits among short-term traders could hasten selling in the near future. As of now, many holders have begun cashing in their profits, revealing an evolving investment strategy in the current market environment.

Profit Realization Peaks While Market Strengthens

Commenting on the state of the market, Julio Moreno, head of research at CryptoQuant, noted that Bitcoin's recent close above its 365-day moving average reaffirms the continuing bull trend. Currently, the firm’s Bitcoin Bull Score Index stands at 90 out of 100, signaling that market conditions remain favorable, even as profit-taking begins to surface.

Bitcoin recently peaked at $87,400, an eight-month high, yet is now facing intensified selling activity as traders look to secure their returns. The on-chain unrealized profit margin amongst short-term traders surged to 33%, its highest since December 2024, suggesting a historical tendency toward profit locking during such peaks.

On September 22, traders realized profits of 25,700 BTC, the largest single-day realization recorded this year. This trend signifies a strategic shift as various holders seize opportunities for gains following the recent price advancements.

Understanding Market Dynamics: Profit-Taking Trends

The act of profit-taking isn't unusual in the cryptocurrency market. When prices climb, many traders feel an urgency to secure gains, especially after a substantial upward movement. This recent trend, with unrealized profits spiking, suggests that traders are anticipating potential volatility or a price correction. Even seasoned investors understand that with rewards come risks. Profit realization can act as a self-correcting mechanism; when enough traders sell their holdings, it can often trigger a downward spiral due to increased selling pressure.

It’s interesting to consider how this correlates with historical patterns in Bitcoin price movements. Historically, when Bitcoin’s price reaches new heights, traders frequently engage in profit-taking, indicating a pattern of psychological behavior rather than purely market-driven decisions. The idea is simple: secure profits while they're available, especially given the unpredictable nature of this asset. This context adds a layer to the price fluctuations we’re witnessing.

Shifts in Demand Indicate Potential Market Correction

In addition to rising profits, CryptoQuant has pinpointed declining demand as another contributing factor that may restrain Bitcoin’s short-term upside potential. Apparent spot demand diminished by 170,000 BTC over the past month, suggesting that new buying interest hasn't been sufficient to sustain the recent price increases.

Similarly, speculative demand in the futures market weakened significantly, plummeting from 164,000 BTC on September 14 to only 16,000 BTC by September 29. This slowdown is significant since futures activity had been a major catalyst for Bitcoin’s ascendancy.

A drop in demand can signal waning enthusiasm among investors. The crypto market is notoriously susceptible to sentiment shifts, and as traders become more cautious, the overall liquidity may also diminish. If you’re working in this space, recognizing these subtle shifts can inform your own strategies. Keeping an eye on demand dynamics is as vital as monitoring price movements.

Should a correction arise, CryptoQuant has identified the 365-day moving average around $80,000 as the initial major support level. Additional support zones materialize around $71,000 at the 200-day moving average and roughly $67,000 at the on-chain realized price level for traders.

Implications for the Future: Are We in for a Correction?

The current circumstances present a mixed bag. While Bitcoin's bullish trend continues and interest from traders is significant, the caveats of profit-taking and reduced demand could foreshadow a bumpier path ahead. If significant selling emerges, the market may experience a correction, creating further volatility that traders are always keenly aware of.

What this means for you, if you're actively trading, is that the coming weeks could be critical in determining the direction of Bitcoin's price. Keeping a close watch on external factors like regulatory news or macroeconomic trends—truly part and parcel of the crypto experience—will also provide additional context. This isn’t just speculation; it’s often how sentiment shifts affect price outcomes.

And this is the part most people overlook: the psychological element remains a persistent wild card in cryptocurrency trading. Market sentiment, inherently fickle, can turn on a dime. The significant support and resistance levels identified earlier may very well dictate not just price movements but the broader market mood in the times to come. Understanding how these dynamics interplay can help traders prepare for what lies ahead.
