Pirate Nation leverages Arbitrum's Layer-3 technology to enhance gameplay performance and scalability, setting new standards in blockchain gaming.

Understanding Proof of Play
Proof of Play is a blockchain gaming studio committed to creating fully on-chain games that empower players with actual ownership of their in-game assets. Their mission is to develop fun, user-friendly, and decentralized gaming experiences that eliminate the need for players to possess deep blockchain knowledge.
Introducing Pirate Nation
Pirate Nation, developed by Proof of Play, immerses players in a strategy RPG set on the high seas, featuring treasure hunting and naval combat. Players can own, trade, and upgrade assets like ships and crew members while engaging in quests and PvP battles, all aimed at building their pirate empire.
What makes Pirate Nation stand out is its player-centric approach, catering to both casual gamers and competitive players through diverse PvE challenges and seasonal events. By integrating blockchain technology into gameplay, the game remains accessible regardless of a player's cryptocurrency or NFT background.
Exploring the Case Study
Identifying the Opportunity
As a fully on-chain game, Pirate Nation’s entire mechanics are governed by smart contracts, making the game transparent. However, this architecture demands a blockchain capable of swift transactions and low fees to retain a smooth gaming experience.
Initially launched on Polygon, the game faced prohibitive transaction costs during peak times, which surged to tens of thousands of dollars monthly, jeopardizing its economic viability. Transitioning to Arbitrum Nova initially improved speed and reduced costs significantly, making on-chain gaming more feasible. Yet, with increasing player engagement, the game soon began exhausting blockspace on Nova, revealing limitations in the current blockchain infrastructure.
The Proof of Play team recognized that existing traditional blockchains couldn't provide the necessary combination of speed, cost-effectiveness, and sufficient blockspace for a game hosting thousands of concurrent players. CTO Matt Van remarked, "We realized we needed to build our own chains, but also that we loved working with Arbitrum's tech.” This realization was critical for determining a sustainable solution that balanced control over infrastructure with blockchain's inherent security and decentralization.
Crafting a Viable Solution
Enter Arbitrum's Orbit framework, which enabled the Proof of Play team to construct custom Layer-3 blockchains called Apex and Boss. This framework empowered Pirate Nation to create dedicated chains tailored to their gaming use cases, significantly redefining their operational strategies.
The shift from gas fees on a per-player basis to an infrastructure-level cost model offered greater predictability and sustainability in managing operational costs. This means expenses could be handled at a systemic level rather than fluctuating with each transaction.
Moreover, utilizing parallel chains like Apex and Boss allowed effective distribution of player activity, ensuring consistent performance even when thousands engage in battles and trades simultaneously. This solution adeptly addressed scaling challenges while keeping the game’s economic environment unified.
In collaboration with Conduit, Proof of Play further honed these Layer-3 chains for dynamic gaming operations, achieving processing capabilities up to 70 million gas per second—setting new benchmarks for performance in blockchain gaming.
Performance Metrics and Growth
Pirate Nation's integration with Arbitrum Orbit has yielded significant performance advancements. The foundational speed advantage that Arbitrum offers—boasting block times of merely 250 milliseconds—is crucial for ensuring an engaging gameplay experience. According to Van, the enhanced system now boasts an impressive capacity for processing gas.
Apex and Boss have reported substantial gas consumption—indicating strong engagement levels. With Apex, which launched in February 2024, gas fee usage surpassed 427 trillion gwei, while Boss, launched in July 2024, reports over 136 trillion gwei. Insights from rollup.wtf show these chains positioned among the top in Mgas/S, outperforming many generic-purpose blockchains, highlighting both the efficiency of Arbitrum’s infrastructure and the rising demand for fully on-chain gaming.
These advancements mean that Pirate Nation can support tens of thousands of concurrent users without performance degradation. Near-instant transaction confirmations lead to fluid gameplay experiences, competing effectively with traditional games. The assurance of dedicated blockspace for game actions ensures reliability, independent of activities across other networks.
Pirate Nation’s success is paving the way for a new standard in blockchain gaming infrastructure, setting a blueprint for future endeavors in the industry. By harnessing Arbitrum’s capabilities, Proof of Play has tackled core challenges related to performance, cost, and scalability, ultimately broadening the horizon for blockchain gaming.
